Deskcretary Keeps Your Desktop Clean and Tidy

When I worked in technical support, I knew several users who were guilty of keeping their computer desktops cluttered with dozens--if not hundreds--of files and folders. Every file they downloaded went straight to the desktop, and in some cases their files were stacked on top of each other.

If I had known about it, I would have suggested Deskcretary, a free app that keeps your desktop clean, organized, and archived so you can easily find files that you dump there after they're gone. Deskcretary doesn't do anything that a good scheduled task can't do or that you couldn't do manually if you had the time to do it, but that's the point: The app does what you don't have time to do, or don't want to be bothered with doing. If you have all your Web browsers set to download files directly to your desktop, and if you've been known to save every e-mail attachment and document you've worked on to your desktop, Deskcretary can help.

The app is free and supports Windows XP and Vista. Once installed, Deskcretary creates a folder on your desktop where it will keep your archived files and folders. The app then regularly moves items on your desktop to its own folder, organizing them by date. You can view the files directly by browsing the folders, but Deskcretary recommends that you use its built-in file-browsing utility, the Deskcretary Explorer, to navigate the files. If you need to move one back to the desktop where you can easily access it, simply click Restore, and the file is back in its original file location.

Deskcretary can be configured to run archives automatically whenever you choose. The app can archive daily, weekly, or monthly, and you can select on which day the operation takes place. You can also run archives manually, at any time you choose. Deskcretary runs quietly in the system tray, waiting for its scheduled archive or for your request. The app can even handle folders on your desktop as well as documents and other files.

Deskcretary also gives you control over the archiving process, allowing you to exclude certain files or types of files that you always want to live on your desktop, enable file compression, and more. The Deskcretary Explorer makes it easy to browse your archived files by type or date archived, and offers search tools to help you quickly find an archived file you're looking for. Unfortunately, Deskcretary only works on your desktop; you can't easily use it to archive and manage other files and folders on your system.

Again, Deskcretary doesn't do much that you couldn't do yourself if you had time, but if you're the type of person who keeps all of your files all over your desktop it's already clear you don't have the time or the inclination. If that's a problem and the state of your desktop irritates you, Deskcretary can help tidy it up and can even streamline your important desktop files for easier backups.
